In the ICCO consultation conference in Chiang Mai in November, 2006; Odile Ruijs shared a news that a million hectare of forests land in Mondolkiri Cambodia was sold to BHP Billiton for mineral exploration (the area of hundreds of thousands of minority people are living). SPERI took this initiative to do a Brainstorming between Odile Ruijs, Kees de Ruiter, Roger Henk (ICCO coordinator in Cambodia), Christian Erni - IWGIA, Margreet Mook and David.

There are 20 different Indigenous Peoples’ groups who live in 15 provinces of Cambodia as you can see from this map. They are estimated to be around 190,000 in population, which equals 1.4% of the population of Cambodia. Many of these groups also live across the border in Laos, Vietnam and Thailand

Deqin County lies in Northwest of Yunnan Province, upper-stream of the Mekong river. 4 mine exploring sites on the bank of Mekong river, among them 3 sites are located on the saint mountains.

Vừa rồi lãnh đạo UBND tỉnh Hậu Giang thừa nhận đã không tham khảo các ý kiến từ Bộ Nông nghiệp và Phát triển nông thôn, cụ thể là các cục có trách nhiệm về lĩnh vực thủy sản, lâm nghiệp trước khi chấp thuận dự án nhà máy giấy của Công ty Lee & Man. Nhưng có lẽ cũng còn thiếu, khi không ai nhắc đến các nhà khoa học và dân chúng quanh vùng bị ảnh hưởng trực tiếp từ chất thải khí, nước của nhà máy.
